Romeo and Juliet... Wonderful!

So, in my English class we have to make song comparisons for each act... So, here we go:

Act I, Mumford & Sons, "Lover's Eyes"

Love was kind, for a timeNow just aches, and it makes me blindThis mirrors haunts, by eyes too brightThat I can't see the others in my lifeBut we're too young, heads too strongTo bear the weight of these lover's eyesCuz I feel numb beneath her tonguebeneath the curse of these lover's eyes.
Do not ask the price I pay for I must live with my quiet rageTame the ghosts in my head that run wild and wish me deadShould you shake my ash to the windLord forget all of my sinsOh let me die where I lie beneath the curse of my lover's eyes
Cuz there's no drink nor drug I triedTo rid the curse of these lover's eyesCuz I feel numb beneath your tongueYour strength just makes me feel less strong

Do not ask the price I pay for I must live with my quiet rageTame the ghosts in my head that run wild and wish me deadShould you shake my ash to the windLord forget all of my sinsOh let me die where I lie 'neath the curse of my lover's eyes
But I'll walk slow, I'll walk slowTake my hand, help me on my way.And I'll walk slow, I'll walk slowTake my hand, help me on my way.And I'll walk slow, I'll walk slowTake my hand, I'll be on my way.And I'll walk slow, I'll walk slowTake my hand, help me on my way.
And a little snippet from Act I, Scene v, page 813:
ROMEO[To JULIET] If I profane with my unworthiest hand
This holy shrine, the gentle fine is this:
My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand
To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss.
JULIETGood pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much,
Which mannerly devotion shows in this;
For saints have hands that pilgrims' hands do touch,
And palm to palm is holy palmers' kiss.
ROMEOHave not saints lips, and holy palmers too?
JULIETAy, pilgrim, lips that they must use in prayer.100
ROMEOO, then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do;
They pray, grant thou, lest faith turn to despair.
JULIETSaints do not move, though grant for prayers' sake.
ROMEOThen move not, while my prayer's effect I take.
Thus from my lips, by yours, my sin is purged.
JULIETThen have my lips the sin that they have took.
ROMEOSin from thy lips? O trespass sweetly urged!
Give me my sin again.
JULIETYou kiss by the book.

Okay, this song goes with Act I, I think, because it... Well, it just fits. The song says "I felt numb beneath her tongue" and Romeo... Well, Romeo basically melts under Juliet's lips, in my opinion. The band also says things about how love made them blind. Well, Romeo and Juliet were blind to the world around them, like a couple of Hormonal teenagers that want nothing but se- You know. The deed. The song also says "But we're too young, our heads too strong." Romeo and Juliet are way to young to be moving so fast, in my opinion.

Act II, Lionel Richie, "Endless Love"

My love,
There's only you in my life
The only thing that's bright

My first love,
You're every breath that I take
You're every step I make

And I
(I-I-I-I-I)
I want to share
All my love with you
No one else will do...

And your eyes
Your eyes, your eyes
They tell me how much you care
Ooh yes, you will always be
My endless love

Two hearts,
Two hearts that beat as one
Our lives have just begun

Forever
(ohhhhhh)
I'll hold you close in my arms
I can't resist your charms

And love
Oh, love
I'll be a fool
For you,
I'm sure
You know I don't mind
Oh, you know I don't mind

'cause you,
You mean the world to me
Oh
I know
I know
I've found in you
My endless love

Oooh-woow
Boom, boom
Boom, boom, boom, boom, booom
Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom

Oooh, and love
Oh, love
I'll be that fool
For you,
I'm sure
You know I don't mind
Oh you know
I don't mind

And, yes
You'll be the only one
'cause no one can deny
This love I have inside
And I'll give it all to you
My love
My love, my love
My endless love

Honestly, it seems that Mr. Richie based the song off of the entire balcony scene. It actually fits really well, because Juliet announces her undying Romeo-love for all to hear. (Technically, no one was supposed to hear, but Romeo did.) As you can see from this Act II, Scene ii Quote from line 35: "O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo? /Deny thy father and refuse thy name;/ Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,/ And I'll no longer be a Capulet." She is basically asking Romeo to marry her... Even though she does not know he is there, listening. They confess their undying love for each other. How sweet!

Act III, Beyonce, "Broken-Hearted Girl"

You're everything I thought you never were
And nothing like I thought you could have been
But still, you live inside of me, so tell me how is that?
You're the only one I wish I could forget
The only one I love to not forgive
And though you break my heart, you're the only one
And though there are times when I hate you
'Cause I can't erase
The times that you hurt me and put tears on my face
And even now, while I hate you, it pains me to say
I know I'll be there at the end of the day

I don't wanna be without you, babe
I don't want a broken heart
Don't wanna take a breath without you, babe
I don't wanna play that part
I know that I love you, but let me just say
I don't wanna love you in no kind of way, no no
I don't want a broken heart
I don't wanna play the broken-hearted girl
No, no, no broken-hearted girl

There's something that I feel I need to say
But up til' now I've always been afraid that you would never come around
And still I wanna put this out

You say you've got the most respect for me
But, sometimes I feel you're not deserving of me
And still, you're in my heart
But you're the only one
And yes, there are times when I hate you, but I don't complain
'Cause I've been afraid that you would walk away
Oh, but now I don't hate you
I'm happy to say
That I will be there at the end of the day

I don't wanna be without you, babe
I don't want a broken heart
Don't wanna take a breath without you, babe
I don't wanna play that part
I know that I love you, but let me just say
I don't wanna love you in no kind of way, no no
I don't want a broken heart
I don't wanna play the broken-hearted girl
No, no, no broken-hearted girl

Now I'm at a place I thought I'd never be, ooh
I'm living in a world that's all about you and me, yeah
Ain't gotta be afraid, my broken heart is free to spread my wings and fly away, away with you...

I don't wanna be without my baby
I don't want a broken heart
Don't wanna take a breath without my baby
I don't wanna play that part
I know that I love you, but let me just say
I don't wanna love you in no kind of way, no no
I don't want a broken heart
I don't wanna play the broken-hearted girl
No, no, no broken-hearted girl
Broken-hearted girl
No, no, no broken-hearted girl

No broken-hearted girl

Okay. Wow, that was deep. In Act III, we have our honeymoon stage. Juliet doesn't want Romeo to leave, so she says: "Wilt thou be gone? It is not yet near day. It was the nightingale, and not the lark, that pierced the fearful hollow of thine ear; Nightly she sings on yon pomegranate-tree: Believe me, love, it was the nightingale" (Act III, Scene v). In other words, Juliet does not want her Romeo to leave, for fear of her getting a broken heart. And then, later, she is asking him if they'll ever meet again. He does not know, so She cries again. (baby)

Act IV, The Smiths, "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want"

Good times for a change
see, the luck I've had
can make a good man
turn bad

So please please please
let me, let me, let me
let me get what I want
this time

Haven't had a dream in a long time
see, the life I've had
can make a good man bad

So for once in my life
let me get what I want
Lord knows it would be the first time
Lord knows it would be the first time

Okay, wow. That is probably one of the most depressing songs I have heard to date. It definitely reminds me of Act IV scene i the most. In this scene, we have Paris and Friar Lawrence in the Friar's cell, discussing the upcoming marriage. Juliet then enters the room and tries her hardest to avoid Paris' talk of love. Once Paris leaves, Juliet tells Lawrence that if he cannot help her, she will definitely kill herself. Here is a little excerpt from Act IV scene i, lines 60-67. "Therefore, out of thy long-experienced time,/ Give me some present counsel, or, behold,/ 'Twixt my extremes ans me this bloody knife/ Shall play the umpire, arbitrating that/ Which the commission of thy years and art/ Could to no issue of true honor bring./ Be not so long to speak; I long to die,/ If what thou speak'st speak not of remedy."
In that rather long quote, Juliet is basically saying "If you do not help me, I am going to kill myself."

Act V, Death Cab For Cutie(Ahh! <3), "I Will Follow You Into The Dark"

Love of mine some day you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark

No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark
If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

In Catholic school as vicious as Roman rule
I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black
And I held my tongue as she told me
"Son fear is the heart of love"
So I never went back

If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

You and me have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
It's nothing to cry about
'cause we'll hold each other soon
In the blackest of rooms

If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the No's on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
Then I'll follow you into the dark

This does not really pertain to anything in particular, but this is quite literally my favorite song, ever! It's so beautiful. I'm sorry, now for the real comparison. In the first line of the song, it basically says "Love of mine, someday you'll die, and I'll be right behind you." That definitely relates to Romeo, who believes Juliet is dead and is going to kill himself to be with her. Here's a Romeo quote from Act V scene iii lines 116-119: "Come, bitter conduct, come, unsavoury guide!/ Thou desperate pilot, now at once run on/ The dashing rocks the sea-sick weary bark!/ Here's to my love!" Romeo is basically 'telling' Death to come get him, because he is ready.
